Environment for Innovation in Africa
“The South African Medical Research Council
(MRC) identified biotechnology as an emerging research and development
focus area of the organisation [1]. The aim of the biotechnology policy is to promote innovative scientific
discovery, build research capacity and implement new models for conducting
and translating research in biotechnology as it relates to human health.
The overall goal of the policy is to improve and enhance the health and
quality of life of South Africans.
This policy has been developed to be consistent with the Department of
Science and Technology’s National Health Foresight Study [2] and
Biotechnology Platforms [3], the National Biotechnology Strategy for
South Africa [4] and the National Research and Development Strategy for
South Africa [5].” - South Africa Policy for Biotechnology (MRC
Document for Biotechnology 2004)
Devices and Diagnostics
Two of the fastest growing areas in the field of medicine are the access
and use of cutting edge medical devices and novel state of the art
diagnostic technology. We now know that the use of medical devices
has enhanced the overall health picture of so many patients around
the world and we want to be able to drive that growth here in South
Africa and the balance of the continent.
Batswadi will partner with device companies to explore innovative ways
to reach all of South Africa’s patients with innovative devices
in specific disease areas. The development of effective diagnostic technology
is a necessity in everyday life around the world. This has been made
possible by the progression of innovation from the laboratory, to physician
and pharmacy use, and now it is common to see over the counter diagnostic
tests that are readily available to all. This has led to a higher recognition
of disease and improvements in more appropriate and timely treatment.
As part of it’s mission, Batswadi aims to bring these innovative
technologies forward and make them more affordable and accessible to
patients in South Africa and the African continent.
Consumer Products/Cosmeceuticals
Batswadi and its partners are focussed on developing and commercialising a comprehensive range of innovative, evidence-based products for the medical, professional, skin therapist and consumer segments of the dermatology and dermocosmeceutical market.
